Born on 22 October 1948 in Thiruvallaputhur village, Shri T.A. Kaliyamurthy received his initial training in playing Thavil from his great-grandfather Pasupathia Pillai. Later, he polished his art under the tutelage of his maternal uncle S. Kadirvel Pillai.
In the course of a successful concert career, Shri Kaliyamurthy has distinguished himself in the field of Carnatic music with his mastery over the Thavil. An A grade artist of All India Radio, Shri Kaliyamurthy has performed in many prestigious music festivals in India and abroad. He has also worked as an expert of Local Audition Committee at All India Radio, Tiruchirappalli.
Shri T.A. Kaliyamurthy has received many titles and awards. These include the Kalaimamani bestowed by the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram, Government of Tamil Nadu (1981); the Sangeetha Kalasagara conferred by the Visakha Music Academy, Visakhapatnam (2005); the Asthana Vidwan title given by the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham (2006), and the Sangeetha Choodamani bestowed by the Sri Krishna Gana Sabha, Chennai (2015).
Shri T.A. Kaliyamurthy receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 2014 for his contribution to Carnatic instrumental music.
