Born in 1927 in Jalandhar, Punjab, Shri Mohammad Zahoor Khayyam received his initial training in classical music under Husanlal Bhagatram and Amarnath. Later he was a student of Ustad Niyaz Ahmad Khan and Faiyyaz Ahmad Khan of the Kirana gharana. Shri Khayyam has won wide renown as a music director in Bombay’s cinema. Over a period of sixty years, he has composed music for numerous films and popular television serials drawing upon a variety of source material. He has also composed non-film songs with leading playback singers. Shri Khayyam has revolution- ized the manner of singing devotional songs such as Bhajan, Shabad, and Naat in popular cinema. Apt orchestra- tion using Indian instruments is distinctive of his music as is his use of choice lyrics. Thus, his compositions are always poetic, melodious and soulful, As an outstanding composer in films, Shri Khayyam has received honours such as the National Award for Best Music Director, the Filmfare Award, and the Lata Mangeshkar Award. The State Government of Punjab has bestowed on him its Ashoka Award for his service to music. Shri Mohammad Zahoor Khayyam Hashmi receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to creative and experimental music.
