Born in 1921 in Thanjavur, T amil Nadu, Shri Kubernath Appasaheb Tanjorkor is among the foremost teachers of Bharatanatyam dance. He received his training from Shri Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai, the great master of Thanjavur. Further, he learnt Carnatic music from Shri Balakrishna Pillai and Hindustani music from Ustad Faiyaz Khan. Shri Kubernath Tanjorkar started his career as a dance teacher in 1941 at the Bhatkhande College of Hindustani Music, Lucknow. Later he was appointed as Nattuvanar in the Baroda court, where he served from 1948 to 1950. Subsequently, he served as Professor of dance at Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, till his retirement in 1981. A dedicated teacher, Shri Kubernath Tanjorkar has trained a large number of dancers over the last five decades. He has to his credit a number of compo- sitions in dance and music. He is now imparting training at the Tanjore Dance Music and Art Research Centre and Tanjore Nrutyashala at Baroda. Among various honours, he received the Gujarat Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1971. Shri Kubernath Appasaheb Tanjorkar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Bharatanatyam.
