Shrimati R. Rhadha was born in 1941 in Mumbai. She was initially trained in Bharatanatyam under Vazhuvoor Ramiah Pillai and then studied Kuchipudi under Shri Vempati Chinna Satyam. Subsequently, she continued her training in Bharatanatyam and specialized in the Vazhuvoor style of the dance. Shrimati R. Rhadha rose to prominence as a dancer along with her sisters Kamala and Vasanthi. Other than perform- ance, she has undertaken several projects of archival recordings on the Vazhuvoor parampara for the Sruti Foundation, Chennai, and Doordarshan, New Delhi. She has also conducted work- shops, seminars, and the lecture-demonstrations at various places in India and abroad. She has trained a number of disciples, some of whom are established dancers and teachers today. For her excellence as a Bharatanatyam exponent and teacher, Shrimati Rhadha has been honoured by sabhas in India and abroad. Among other honours, she received the Nrithya Rathnakara title conferred by the Bhairavi Indian Fine Arts Society in the United States in 2003. Shrimati R. Rhadha receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution in the field of Bharatanatyam.
