Born in 1948 in Pune, Shrimati Sucheta Bhide Chapekar was initiated in dance by Shri Parvati Kumar of Mumbai. Later, she was trained in the manner of the Thanjavur school of Bharata- natyam under the late K. P. Kittappa Pillai. She studied Carnatic music under Thailam- bal Krishna in Chennai and acquired proficiency also in Hindustani music. She holds a Master’s degree in Fine Arts and Dance from Mumbai University and a doctoral degree from the University of Pune. Shrimati Chapekar has performed widely within the country and abroad and gained renown for her purity of technique, graceful nrittta and eloquent abhinaya. She has worked on the compositions of King Shahji and Saifosi of Thanjavur. She is particularly well known for her dance presenta- tion ‘Nritya Ganga’. She has given lecture-demonstrations on dance in several universities, and worked in Pune University as a visiting lecturer. A number of young scholars have researched under her guidance for their doctoral degrees in dance. Shrimati Sucheta Chapekar has received many awards including the Maharashtra Gaurav conferred by the Government of Maharashtra. Shrimati Sucheta Bhide Chapekar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Bharatanatyam.
