Born in 1953 in West Bengal, Sushri Saswati Sen received her initial training in Kathak dance from Shrimati Reba Vidyarthi at Kathak Kendra, Delhi. She later specialized in the art under Pandit Birju Maharaj. She has served the Kendra for several years as the leading dancer of its repertory company. Assimilating in her art the traditional knowledge and creativity of her guru, Sushri Saswati Sen has won for herself a place among the leading representatives of the Lucknow gharana. She has received critical acclaim for sensitivity in her abhinaya. She has perform- ed extensively in major dance festivals across the world, and has worked with her guru in the production of a number of dance-dramas. She has conducted workshops on Kathak dance, and has trained a number of Kathak dancers at the Kalashram institute of dance and music. She has assisted Pandit Birju Maharaj in the publication of his books Anga Kavya and Raas Kunjan and in the production of the video film Kathak Parichay. Sushri Sen is the recipient of several honours including the Sanskriti Award bestowed by Sanskriti Prati- shthan, Delhi. Sushri Saswati Sen receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Kathak dance.
