Born in 1945 in Jodhpur, Shrimati Urmila Nagar was initiated into dance by Shri Gopal Dangi and was subsequently trained by Shri Kundan Lal Gangani in her native city. Later, at Kathak Kendra, Delhi, she was a disciple of the Jaipur gharana maestro Shri Sunder Prasad. She also learnt vocal music from Shri Dilip Chandra Vedi and Shrimati Siddheshwari Devi. Shrimati Urmila Nagar has earned wide fame as a Kathak dancer since the 1960s. She has particularly excelled in nritta aspects, and her compositions are enriched by her training in Hindustani music and her own accomplishment as a singer. She has participated in all the important conferences of music and dance and is respected today as a senior representative of Jaipur gharana of Kathak. Shrimati Nagar has also done notable work as a teacher of the art and has been imparting training at Kathak Kendra, Delhi, since 1991. Shrimati Urmila Nagar has to her credit recordings of her renderings of Thumri and other light classical forms, which she has also frequently performed over All India Radio. Shrimati Nagar has received several honours for her work including the Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Akademi Award confer- red in 1988. Shrimati Urmila Nagar recei- ves the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Kathak dance.
