Born in 1941 in Cherppulassery village in Kerala, Shri Sadanam Krishnankutty received his initial training in Kathakali at Gandhi Seva Sadan, Palakkad, under several eminent gurus including Thekkinkattil Ravunni Nair, Kottakkal Krishnankutty, Kottakkal Sankaranarayanan Embranthiri, and Mani Madhava Chakkyar. Later, he was instructed in the manner of the Kalluvazhi sampradaya of Kathakali under Keezhpadam Kumaran Nair on a scholarship from the Government of India (1962-65). He has also received training in Bharatanatyam. An outstanding Kathakali artist, Shri Sadanam Krishnan- kutty has gained renown for his Pachha and Kathi Vesham. He has given numerous lecture- demonstrations in seminars and conferences and has perform- ed extensively in India and other countries. He has received critical acclaim for his performances in the roles of Ravana and Keechaka. Shri Krishnankutty has simultane- ously trained several Kathakali artists including Kalanilayam Gopalakrishnan, Kalamanda- lam Rama Chandran Unnithan, Kalanilayam Balakrishnan, Kalamandalam Haridas, and Sadanam Bhasi. He has been conferred several honours for his work including the Kerala Kala- mandalam Award and the Award of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy. Shri Sadanam Krishnankutty receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribu- tion in the field of Kathakali.
