Born in 1924 in Manipur, Shrimati Haobam Ongbi Ngangbi Devi is among the foremost exponents of Manipuri Ras. She received her training in Ras Leela, Natasankeertan and Lai Haraoba from Gurus Maisnam Amubi Singh, Haobam Atomba Singh and Rajkumar Surjabaro Singh. She also learnt music from Guru Maisnam Thambon Singh and Kshetrimayum Ojha Bidhu Singh and the martial arts of Manipur from Ojha Pheijao Sana and Ojha Damu Singh. Shrimati Ngangbi Devi joined Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal, in 1954 as a musician and over the years has gained eminence as a teacher and performer. She has also won wide popularity in Manipur as a Ras Leela performer, excelling in both Jagoi and Sutra. From 1973 to 1985 she served as Vice- Principal of the Dance Academy, where she trained a large number of students who are now leading performers. Shrimati Ngangbi Devi was honoured with the Manipur State Kala Akademi Award in 1980. The title Nritya Bhushan was conferred upon her by Manipuri Sahitya Parishad in 1985. Shrimati Haobam Ongbi Ngangbi Devi receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Manipuri Ras.
