Born on 18 June 1920 in Mylapore, Madras, Shri A. Kanan learnt Hindustani vocal music from Shri Lahanu Baburao, Shri Girija Shankar Chakravorty and Ustad Amir Khan. A learned exponent of the Khayal, he has performed for more than thirty years and has also been a successful teacher. Shri Kanan has served as a guru at the Sangeet Research Academy, Calcutta, since 1978. Apart from his engagement with Hindustani music, he has sung playback songs in some Bengali films including Meghe Dhaka Tara — directed by Ritwik Ghatak — Jadu Bhatta, Shurer Piyashi and Dhuli. Shri Kanan was honoured with the Award of the Govern- ment of West Bengal in 1986 and the Emeritus Fellowship of the Government of India in 1996. Shri A. Kanan receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Hindustani vocal music.
