Born in 1943 in Palakkad in Kerala, Shri Kalamandalam Vasu Pisharody received his training in Kathakali under Shri Vazhenkada Kunchu Nair. In 1967, he completed his post- graduate studies in Kathakali Vesham and went on to special- ize as a performer in the style of Kalluvazhi Chitta with a scholarship from the Govern- ment of India. He joined Kerala Kalamandalam as an instructor in 1979 and served the institution for a number of years. At his retirement in 1999, Shri Pisha- rody was Head of the Depart- ment of Kathakali Vesham in Kalamandalam, and also Vice- Principal of the institution. Shri Vasudevan Pisharody has performed extensively within and outside the country, and has conducted workshops on Kathakali Vesham in India and its neighbouring countries, Europe, and America. He has directed and produced a number of Kathakali plays such as Ravana Putri, Shri Krishna Leela, Krishna-Arjuna Vijayam, and Rama Charitam. His innova- tive work includes a play based on a Greek story. As an actor, Shri Pisharody has won critical acclaim for his roles as King Rugmangada, Arjuna, and Ravana. For his outstanding work as a Kathakali artist, he has received several honours including the Kerala Kalaman- dalam Award and the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Puraskar (2003). Shri Kalamandalam Vasu- devan Pisharody receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Kathakali.
