Jatin Goswami



Born in 1933 in Dergaon, Assam, Shri Jatin Goswami was trained in the dance and music of the Vaishnava Sattras by eminent gurus such as Shri Dharanidhar Goswami, Bishnu Prasad Rabha, Maniram Dutta Muktiyar, and Roseswar Saikia Bor- bayan. He has distinguished himself as a teacher and performer of Sattriya dance and music. Since the 1960s, Shri Goswami has also worked consistently for the propagation and development of Sattriya dance. To this end, he established the Pragjyoti Kala Parishad in 1962, an organiza- tion dedicated to study of Sattriya dance traditions, which functions under the guidance of his teacher Shri Bishnu Prasad Rabha. In 1966, he formed a repertory company performing Sattriya dance and Ankia Nat Bhaona. He has created a number of experimental works for this company as well as dance-dramas employing the Sattriya arts. A visiting lecturer at the Assam Sattriya Music College, Shri Jatin Goswami has authored several books on Sattriya dance such as Mati Akhora, Nrityara Prathamik Hasta, Nritya Shiksha, and Nrityara Paribhashik Sabda aru Sangya. He has received several honours for his dedicated service in the cause of Sattriya dance. These include the Best Dance Director Award confer- red by the Government of Assam, and the Bharatiyam Samman bestowed by the East Zone Cultural Centre. Shri Jatin Goswami receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi for his contribution to Sattriya dance.
