Born on 13 July 1947 in Navsari, Gujarat, Shri Astad Aderbad Deboo initially received training in Kathak under Guru Prahlad Das in Calcutta and in Kathakali under Guru E.K. Pannicker. Later, he attended the London School of Contemporary Dance, learning Martha Graham’s modern dance technique, and learnt Jose Limon’s technique in New York. He has also trained with Pina Bausch in the Wuppertal Dance Company, Germany, attended workshops of the Pilobolus Dance Company, and attended American Dance Festival classes in the United States. Using his wide-ranging education in dance to advant- age, Shri Astad Deboo has created a dance-theatre style which successfully assimilates Indian and Western techniques. He has experimented with a variety of forms, themes, concepts and performance spaces, and has collaborated with other dancers, composers and designers to create innovative works of aesthetic value. His works represent an important segment in contem- porary dance expression in India. In the international arena, Shri Astad Deboo has worked with Maia Plissetskaia at the Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow, and conducted workshops at the London School of Contempo- rary Dance and the China Academy of Arts, Beijing. Shri Astad Deboo receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to contemporary creative dance.
