Born in 1950 in Kanayam village in Palakkad district of Kerala, Shri Sivan Nambootiri received his initial training in Kutiyattam under Painkulam Rama Chakyar and Mani Madhava Chakyar at Kerala Kalamanda- lam, Cheruthuruthy. He is one of the first persons outside the Chakyar community to have learned this ancient dramatic art. He has also studied Kathakali at the Unnayi Warier Smaraka Kalanilayam in Irinjalakkuda. Over the years, Shri Sivan Nambootiri has established himself as a leading performer on the Kutiyattam stage and has presented performances in major festivals within the country and abroad. He has taught Kutiyattam at Kerala Kalaman- dalam, joining the institution as an instructor in 1975. He is currently a Visiting Professor at the School of Drama, University of Calicut. He has been featured in documentary films on Kutiyattam including the one directed by Shri Adoor Gopalakrishnan. Shri Sivan Nambootiri has received various honours inclu- ding the first Mrinalini Sarabhai Award (1999), the Kerala Kalamandalam Award (2003), the Acharya Puruskaram of Kerala Kalamandalam (2005), and the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award (1998). Shri Kalamandalam Sivan Nambootiri receives the San- geet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Kutiyattam.
