Purushottam Darwhekar

Born in 1926 in Bhandara, Maharashtra, Shri Purushottam Vyankatesh Darwhekar started his theatrical career as a child artist in 1936. He established his amateur theatre group Ranjan Kala Mandir in 1950, which domi- nated the Bombay Theatre Competition for almost a decade and went on to win many State awards. Having joined All India Radio as a script-writer in 1954, Purushottam Darwhekar moved to Bombay in 1973 and continued to write and direct plays which were hugely popular. Katyar Kayat Ghusali, written and directed by him, ran to more than six hundred shows. He worked in various capacities with All India Radio and retired as Senior Producer in Bombay; later, he was a Producer Emeritus for AIR and Doordarshan for two years.
A recipient of many honours, Purushottam Darwhekar received the Vishnudas Bhave Gold Medal as the Best Dramatist of Maharashtra in 1994. He was bestowed the Ram Ganesh Gadkari Memorial Award in 1997.
Shri Purushottam Darwhekar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Marathi theatre as a director.
